CrowsToes One Mad Crazy Summer, Pt. I

I was so deliriously excited when, while I was in the States this summer, Lauri sent me her amazing CrowsToes One Mad Crazy Summer collection. I couldn't wait to start swatching these beauties immediately! And then there was travel and nail breaks and womp, womp, womp, and I've taken waaaay too long to get these photographed. Fortunately, Lauri's collections look fantastic all year long, and what was a truly awesome summer collection is also rich enough to carry straight through autumn and winter as well!

Today's post features Minion, Me & This Army, and Tiki Torch, three of the nine polishes in One Mad Crazy Summer. Please join me for pics and raves, after the break!

CrowsToes Minion is one of those fabulously nuanced, shifting polishes that drives cameras insane and makes people say, "Photos do not do this polish justice." A purple foil duo-/multichrome, it also shows rich shades of teal and green...and it's a shimmer polish too! It has the lovely, silvery raindrop-type shimmer, but it also features bright, shimmering magenta highlights.

After I put on Minion and took my pics, I pretty much spent the next ten minutes wandering around my flat, just kinda staring at my nails in different lighting and going, "Wow." My camera flat-out refused to capture the full extent of the awesomeness, but if you look at the bottle you can see the kind of rich colour-shifting going on here...

Duochrome, shimmer, and foil might be a lot for one polish, but the balance among them here is just right. The effect is stunning, but it isn't showy or trying hard. It's just quietly amazing.

CrowsToes Me & This Army is a muted green jelly with a whole lot of dusty blue and grey and just an insane amount of shimmering purple fabulousness.

This is two coats of Me & This Army over China Glaze Immortal (a dark grey polish with a purple shimmer that was first obscured, and then completely blown away, by the fantastic shimmer in the CrowsToes). On its own or layered over a lighter colour, the jelly base leans a little more towards a faded, Army green, but even when it isn't the star of the show, that smoky green still shows through.

I hope these pictures manage to convey how ethereal this shimmer really is! It absolutely dazzles.

Husband spotted this polish on me at a lunch date and said, "Shiny!" which is Husband for, "Your nail polish has attracted my attention, and I find it pleasing!" Intrigued, he asked if it was green or purple. I said, "Yep! Green, purple...blue. Also grey," upon which he gave it this face.

CrowsToes Tiki Torch is yet another purple polish of Lauri's that literally made me gasp out loud from the pretty.

Tiki Torch is a deep, aubergine jelly with sparks of firelight (or possibly, micro-glitter) trapped inside. It builds to a nice opacity on its own, but I decided to layer it here over Wet n Wild Disturbia.

I just can't get over that amazing spark! Those tiny pieces of orange and red dance and dazzle in the light, and they really do look like bits of fire silhouetted against the night sky. The colours are a gorgeous contrast against the rich, dark purple too!

I didn't say much about the formulas because they were all up to Lauri's usual standard, which is to say they were excellent, and that's particularly impressive when taking into account the very different materials that appear to go into all of these. Each CrowsToes collection I've seen showcases both artistry and chemistry--and possibly some alchemy too--and this one is no exception.

More swatches of the CrowsToes One Mad Crazy Summer Collection are coming soon! CrowsToes can be purchased at Llarowe, as well as a few other retailers listed on Lauri's blog, The Polished Crow.

  3. Polishes...pretty. You...hilarious. I read your blog religiously, at first for the pretty, pretty nail art and now for whatever you write before, after and in between the pictures. Don't get me wrong. You're an amazing nail artist but your writing puts you in a league of very few. "Shiny!" is also a word in my household, generally used when admiring jewelry, and usually accompanied with a "Yeah, yeah, I know we can't afford it face." But "Shiny!" did crack me up. As for husband's expression, that was perfect, too! Are you a writer? As in, you've studied to be one, or you just are one, or you do or have done it for a living? Because amusing words flow out of you in a style that has great timing to it. I can "hear" it. Hope that makes sense. I'm a fan! Thanks! Delphi
