Twinsie Tuesday: Nationality, Culture, or...

This week's Twinsie Tuesday theme is one of those I had to rack my brain over before it clicked. With a broad theme of a manicure inspired by nationality, ethnicity, culture, or flags, I naturally started off thinking about my own heritage. I thought about MacGregor tartan, but I'm just terrible at straight lines. Tried a Claddagh for my Irish side, but my attempt at painting hands was just tragic. Back to the drawing board, and I realized it didn't have to be my ethnicity, culture or flag--I could choose from any culture on the planet! Ooh, come to think of it, why stop at just the one planet? Oh, yeah! My inner geek asploded with happy, and I had my flag.

I am a gimongous Star Trek fan. Original series, new movies, and everything in between. It'd been a while since I watched enough Trek to remember what the United Federation of Planets flag looked like, but thankfully some quick Google-fu reassured me that I could manage a reasonable interpretation without having to draw any straight lines or hands.

Instead of an exact replica, I pared the flag down to some basic elements, and I really like how it turned out! The darker blue is Bandi F419 Royal Blue, and then I painted just my left index and pinky with Revlon Colorstay Coastal Surf. Then with white acrylic paint, those two got some laurel wreath-y swooshes, and I used a toothbrush to scatter-spray the stars. I really did think about trying to do the stars exactly like the flag on those middle fingers, but I had a startlingly clear vision of me going all neurotic perfectionist about getting them all just right and squished that madness before it started. Totally legal under the "inspired by" clause anyway, but I still did 3 dots for the larger stars just because. And now I give myself about 24 hours tops before I watch the last movie again because it is thoroughly and completely awesome, and imma stop here before I geek out completely.

  4. "asploded!" That's awesome! I had an idea the other day to try a toothbrush for nail art but I had more of a crosshatching pattern in mind. That's just my OCD trying to come out. I really liked the splatter effect you achieved. While I was typing this comment I became curious when the new Star Trek movie will open so off to IMDb I went. It opens in the USA (I live in California) on May 17, but it opens the day before in Hong Kong (according to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1408101/releaseinfo)! I bet you can't wait! However, when I pulled up IMDb, they were advertising the remastering of ST:NG season three right on the home page with a beautiful graphic. I thought, "I wish I could attach this picture to my comment on her blog," but then realized you had an email too so I'm going to send you both the IMDb home page graphic and an additional picture of the next movie's poster, just in case you haven't seen it. Seeing that Star Trek ad on the home page was just too much of a coincidence for me! Thanks for the great blog!

  6. Mind. Blown
I love your take on this challenge, it's really cute how you thought of the box for it. I'm not a particular Star Trek fan (though I do consider myself to be pretty geeky) so this was right up my alley. Love how you depicted the design on your nails too, you are super skilled in nailart :)

  7. Freaking awesome! I used to call it star crack, when I was little and would run around buzzing everyone. I didn't like star trek as a kid, my brother forced me to watch it. I really enjoyed the new movie!

  11. As someone who was raised on the original Star Trek series (and to a lesser extent, TNG) I absolutely love this mani! I am dying to see the new movie--will prolly go with my folks since Star Trek is one of the few things all three of us seem to love equally. :) What a fun idea for this theme!
