Today for Twinsie Tuesday we're doing fictional animal print nails! I wanted so much to make up some colourful, fantastical new creature for this, but my brain just wasn't having it. Instead of "fictional" it got stuck on "mythical," and from there it went straight to dragons.
The base is a roughly sponged gradient of OPI Big Apple Red, OPI In My Back Pocket (orange) and OPI Need Sunglasses? (which I desperately need a new bottle of because I barely had enough left to yellow up the tips). To add some fire, I used Essie Shine of the Times, a stunning flakie top coat, and then on top of all that, I painted scales in coppery-gold acrylic paint.
Next time I do something like this, I'm going to make the scales a lot bigger and not cover so much of these blazing flakies, because they looked awesome. Also, painting gold on top of shimmering yellow? Reeeally hard to see straight. >_<
I decided to go specifically a with fire dragon because the colours are just so Hong Kong. Especially for New Year's, red dragons are absolutely everywhere. Dragons are said to be lucky, as are red and gold--red because it drives away evil and gold because gold is gold. Hopefully I can remember this design for next Chinese New Year!
(By the way, the larger pictures...good view of the details or just sodding enormous?)

DeleteI love the colors you used - definitely like a hot, burning dragon!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Heather! I'm usually into much cooler tones, but I'm trying to branch into the warmer colours more often--hehe, these are nothing if not warm! :P
DeleteAwesome mani! And I love the bigger pictures. :) I do that too.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cordia!! I love nice, big pictures like yours when I'm visiting blogs, but I'm just not used to seeing my own hand this huge. ;o)

DeleteThese are gorgeous! So fiery! I have the same problem with fish scales. It seems like they have to be really big! The bigger, the better they look.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much! This was my first time doing any kind of scales in nail art, but now I totally want to try again--and definitely make them a whole lot bigger!
DeleteAwesome job! I love the colors you used.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Helen! :D
DeleteLove this!! I can totally see the Hong Kong influence here and I love how you took a lot of different elements (gradient, flakies, nail art) and turned them into one gorgeous mani!
ReplyDeleteAw, Chelsea, thank you!!! ♥
DeleteNot only do I love this mani, but I also love the new look of your blog!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, Tina! For both!! ^_^
DeleteI love everything about this! It has so many dimensions! Also your blog makeover looks fab!
ReplyDeleteChiChi, thank you so, so much!! Hehe, I worried at first that I might've been trying to pack too many elements into one manicure, but I figured fire dragons aren't exactly fabled for their subtlety. Which is good because neither am I. :oP
DeleteLady, this is just too much amazingness for one post.
ReplyDeleteOmigosh, Amanda, thank you!! ♥
