OPI My Private Jet

OPI My Private Jet is a bit of a notorious polish. Since discontinuing the original, highly holographic version, OPI has released several subsequent incarnations, all under the same name. Each features slightly different shades of brown with varying degrees of grey, and while a couple have holographic particles, none comes close to the incredible flare of the original.

The thing is, though, that if you're measuring each against the original release and hoping for the same thing, you're bound to be disappointed. When Anna sent me a bottle in a recent swap, I was eager to see how it stood on its own merits, and I'm happy to say that whatever version this is, I really, really like it! Thanks, Anna!

OPI My Private Jet swatch

This is three coats of OPI My Private Jet with SV top coat. It's a rich brown with grey overtones and light, scattered, holographic particles, both of which are stronger than I was able to capture on camera, but if you click the picture above you should be able to see a hint of how it shines.  No, it's not the original version, but it's not a pony either. It's a beautiful, dusty brown with a pretty, holographic shimmer.

This is definitely a polish I'm going to wear again and again. Sure, I'll keep my eyes out for that elusive, original unicorn, but this version is very much my style.

    1. Thanks, Kelly! I think that since the holographic ingredients became more expensive they've been trying to re-release something "close enough," but they just can't achieve the same effect with the different formulae. Honestly, if they just called the new version (whichever one they settle on ;p) by a different name, I think people would love it!

I also think this would be a good candidate for the DS treatment; if the holo ingredients are more expensive, just call it DS My Original Jet or something and charge an extra buck or two. People would buy it like crazy! ;)

  6. LOL I like how you refer to them as ponies and unicorns- good analogy! :P Swatches that I've seen of the original version of MPJ look amazing but this one is also very pretty!

    1. Haha, thank you, Brittney! Whenever somebody wants something unreasonable, I say, "Yeah, well I want a pony." Same thing when they complain about an apple not being an orange: "It's not a pony either." It's nice to want things, but it's also nice to be able to enjoy what you actually have and not some fictional thing that just ain't gonna happen. ;)

  9. I recently purchased a version of this, definitely not the holo version, but I decided to try an turn it into a holo version by mixing in some of the Color Club Halo Hues that I have - Cherubic and Harp On It. It's not as perfect as the original MPJ but it's definitely more holo-ey now. I'm looking forward to wearing it.
