Twinsie Tuesday: 3D Nails

Today's TT theme is a 3D manicure. In trying to decide what to do for it, I was telling Husband all about Ash's magnificent mushroom and mentioned some of the ideas I'd had. I was standing in front of a planter of flowers with "that look" in my eyes, but knowing my schedule over these few days, he made a rare appeal for sanity. "Sanity," I thought. "That's so crazy, it just might work!"

They may not stack up to a garden of flowers in bloom, but these nail studs were still something new to play with, and I'm actually pleased with the results!

Aiming for the 'sanity' angle, I went out shopping yesterday for something 3D to put on my nails (bow appliqu├ęs or similar) but didn't find any in the three nail/beauty supply stores that I know of within 15 minutes' walking distance of my flat (seriously, I love Hong Kong). I did, however, find a gorgeous new polish to use today, and then I came home to discover a packet of silver nail studs in my basket of untried nail goodies that I'd completely forgotten about. So, yay for already having something! And while I was out, I also found another bottle of OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls, which I was just saying in my last post that I was worried about having to start rationing my use of, so even though I already had the studs at home, the shopping trip was still time well spent.

I applied my new polish, China Glaze Midnight Mission, and was totally wowed. I'm not usually drawn to navy blues, but the depth of texture in this polish (from the fall 2010 Vintage Vixen collection) is simply amazing. It's like foil and glitter got together and had a magical, sparkling little baby. China Glaze, if you're listening, I need about umpteen more polishes with this exact same finish, STAT.

Once Midnight Mission was dry, I added the studs by first painting the nail with a coat of SV. Then I dipped a toothpick in a tiny bit of clear polish and used that to pick up the stud and position it on the nail. It was a little bit tricky, getting the positioning right, but working with a freshly laid coat of a thick, clear topper like Seche Vite, there was enough play in it to make some very minor adjustments without completely glunking the whole thing up.

After those had a few minutes to adhere and dry, I gave my nails another good coat of SV on top to help seal them on. I would definitely use yet another coat to be sure I had all the stud corners well sealed if I were going to wear this manicure for a couple of days, but these should still look great at dinner tonight.

After dinner I have another manicure I need to do, so this one won't be surviving long. I'm definitely going to use both this polish and these studs again, though, because I was very happy with them both. I'd love to see how these studs do with a matte finish...

    1. Thanks, Amanda! I hadn't really seen the bottle before (or if I had, I'd managed to look past it somehow), but I really love it too. Going to check out the rest of that collection to see if I missed any others with this excellent finish!

    1. Thank you very much, Maribeth! Husband was more "backing away slowly" than giggling, but maybe I'll give that one a shot someday when I have a little more time (and a little more sanity to spare...). :P

Every time I get my nails to a shape and length I'm happy with it makes me so nervous because it means I'm about to break one off something fierce. It never fails! >_<

  6. Love the studs Elizabeth! And that polish is lovely, a sparkling magical baby :) MBSW is my fave white polish, you've worried me now that I should be worried about when it runs out! Haha

    1. Hahaha, thank you very much, Anne! Really feeling lucky to have spotted both polishes since that store only rarely carries either brand. OPI really needs to "core line" MBSW!

  8. I agree - Midnight Mission is a great polish. I sort of underestimated it at first. Then I got on a huge blue polish thing and ever since then this is one I reach for a ton...esp non summertime. In summer I will wear brights like ChG Drinking my Blues Away and whatever the one from ChG holiday 2011 collection was - think it's Blue Year's Eve - both are really similar to each other...but come non summer days and I want my blue to show and not be too blakened blue and have 'stuff' in it too - this is the shade I reach for. I have not looked on line to see who might have this one still as it's not that old, but maybe I need to as I am down to that point past the bottom 1/4 in my bottle.

    1. I think you're right on--MM is a nice, deep blue, but it's still bright and not blackened at all, and the finish is nicely textured without being too much so. It's a pretty one!!
