Revlon Whimsical

Today I'm swatching Revlon Whimsical, another one of the polishes from my current giveaway. This is easily one of my all-time favourite glitters--it's just so light and pretty!

This is 2-3 coats over Bandi S709 Muse Mint, which Husband picked up for me on his last trip to Seoul. It's a beautiful baby blue with the teeniest hint of green and a subtly frosty finish. More about it in a future post, but it delights me way more than it should that he got it in the Gangnam district. Yes, my nails are now Gangnam style!

As many of you know, Revlon Whimsical is practically a dead-on dupe for Deborah Lippmann Glitter in the Air, which I'm about inches away from buying too. My rationale for the expenditure is that it'll be for a comparison post--I wouldn't be buying it for me, mind you, but for the blog. Yeah, that's the ticket.

The beauty of Revlon Whimsical lies in its ultra-sheer base and its relatively sparse coverage of those lovely little pink and blue glitters. There's also the tiniest touch of shimmer that's not easy to see but gives it an added allure of depth and sparkle.

Whimsical's delicate beauty can also make it a little bit tricky. Most definitely a polish for layering, it's very prone to bubbling (I've actually swatched it before but didn't post the pics because the bubbles were just too prominent in close-up), so it's important to use thin coats and let them dry completely before adding the next. In its favour, the glitter spreads easily, not clumping up or sliding off towards the end of the nail, so you don't have to keep fussing with it to get the glitter where you want it to go.

Okay, I think four pictures is enough to make the point that I love this polish! After I saw it online I got all sad, figuring I'd never find it here in HK, but the very next day I came across several bottles of it just sitting on top of one of the bins at Colourmix! I grabbed one for me, one to save for a giveaway, one as a backup and a fourth one because...I'm not even sure, I think I was on a roll at that point.

I've never been known for my restraint.

    1. I wanted to save this Bandi for its own post, but it really seemed like a good partner polish for Whimsical. Thank you very much, Sarah!

    1. Aw, you didn't like Cinderella? I loved it, but I think this is definitely the more awesome of the two. Now layering them together...actually, I think I'll do that next time! ;)

  10. Good idea - I have some light mints I cannot wear because they look too chalky on me - using this as a topper might make them wearable - or maybe I just need to keep only 1 and donate! Gotta get going on a major stash over-haul.

    1. I keep thinking I should take a good look at my stash and maybe thin the herd too, but I don't even know where I'd start! >_<

    1. Thank you, Tara! You know, I think I've heard that before, that this one might actually come off better somehow. I have to figure, though, even if it's just the same, the price difference would easily give it the advantage!

    1. Thanks, Brittney! Yeah, I definitely had problems the first time or two, trying to balance glitter coverage against the bubbles it gave me, but sticking with thin coats and letting them dry all the way made all the difference for me this time. Now I want to try it over some other polishes too!

  15. I was so excited to see this one in the giveaway! Every time I've seen Whimsical (or Popular, for that matter) in the store, I've picked it up--and put it back down, for some reason. I still want to try it out!

As you seem to have been getting at with the sheerness and bubbling, I've heard it's somewhat of a nightmare to build up (and remove later :o), but it's so lovely on you it looks like it was worth it! Still not convinced how it would look with my skin tone, but it's just such a pretty polish in its own right!

    1. Thank you, Jacee! I think with this one, given the soft, light colour of the glitters, that if you pick a nice base colour, then you're better off not trying to build it up too much and just let the few, pretty glitters make the point, y'know? I can't even imagine trying to build it to opacity! >_<

I didn't find removal any harder than any other glitter--MUCH easier than some, for sure!

    1. Yay! I loved wearing this one too. I thought I might have been going a little overboard, grabbing 4 at once, but now I'm actually wondering if it was enough... ;o)
