Dotted Tan and Site Awards

I'm about to write a whomping great wall of text, so I thought I'd start off with some nails I did a couple of days ago...

black and white dots on tan

The base colour is OPI San Tan-tonio, a smooth and creamy tan that leans ever-so-slightly olive on me. Just for giggles, I added some random dots on top in OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls (near-white) and Revlon Colorstay Stiletto (black). I can't decide if it turned out stylish or silly, but it was just fun to play with my dotting tools after a month away from all my nailstuffs. Didn't get many good pictures of these because I went way heavy with the SV, hoping to keep from smoodging the dots by swiping them too directly with the brush. I mostly succeeded, but it doesn't seem practical to have to use this much top coat. The resulting shine was dang near overwhelming! It was actually kind of awesome in real life, but for pictures, not so much. They look super-caked.

Any suggestions for not streaking nail art with your top coat?

The Liebster Award and The Versatile Blogger Award

Thank you so, so much to the lovely bloggers who have sent awards to Did My Nails. Links, weird facts about me, and my new pretties after the cut!

I would like to thank Never Naked Nails, Polished Art, I Feel Polished, Canvas Nails, The Manicurette and Cremes 'n Glitters for sending me The Liebster Award!

"The Liebster Blog Award is given to upcoming bloggers who have less than 200 followers. 'Liebster' is German for sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing and welcome."
Rules:
  1. Post 11 random facts about yourself.
  2. Answer the questions the tagger has set for you, plus create 11 questions for the people you've tagged to answer.
  3. Choose 11 blogs to receive this award, and link to them in your post.
  4. Notify your chosen recipients.
  5. No tag backs! ^_^
And now that I've just typed out the rules, I'm going to fudge them a bit. I can't imagine anyone being interested in reading 66 things about me, so I'm going to pick 11 12 questions total. Also, my list of recipients is going to be a lot shorter than the 11 it's supposed to be. Some of the sites I'd like to choose have already received it...or have about a thousand too many followers...as it is, a couple of the ones I picked are over 200...basically, what it comes down to is that I suck at rules.

Okay, facts about me...I've already done some of these here and here, so I'll try to keep 'em short and non-redundant. ;p

  • The scar from my appendix removal is a good 6 1/2 inches long; apparently there was no time to be delicate because that sucker was about to blow.
  • You know those colour adverts you get in the middle of the Sunday paper? I modeled for one of those for JC Penney when I was, like, 9. (Buck-tooth gingers with bowl cuts must have been in that year.)
  • I'm eerily good at mimicing voices and sounds but only if I don't think about it or try very hard. When I actually try, it doesn't work at all.
  • I once won a silver medal in women's slalom at a recreational ski event in South Korea.
  • The last book I finished was Thud! by Sir Terry Pratchett (I've read the whole Discworld series about 6 times now).
  • We have annual passes to Hong Kong Disneyland, and I am way overdue for another ride on Space Mountain.
  • I used to sing in a jazz band. We only ever played at the drummer's flat, but we rawked. Or, y'know, jazzed.
  • I cried when they took Diet Coke with Vanilla off the market. Literally cried.
  • I sit up in my sleep almost every night. No definitive word on whether it looks spooky or hysterical.
  • Husband doesn't like tattoos, so I mention getting one every now and then just to watch him do the dance of "If I try to tell her not to, she'll do it just for spite."
  • In high school, I earned varsity letters in football and drama. Yes, the Dramatic Association counted as a winter sport at my school. And for two years I was the equipment manager for the (American) football team, so, letters in football & drama. I am such a jock!

Here are the questions I picked to answer...

How old are you? This mostly applies to how old you feel.
Old enough to know better. Young enough to do it anyway.

What would be your dream polish?
A jelly version of China Glaze For Audrey with suspended glitters a la OPI Rainbow Connection. *le swoon* (Actually, it'd be very similar to the franken that Anne made here!)

What types of YouTube videos do you watch the most?
I sometimes watch nail art tutorials, but my favourite YouTube jams are '80's music videos.

Where in the world would you most like to visit?
This is probably supposed to mean on an exotic vacation, but if I had to pick just one place I'd most like to go, it would be to Magnolia, Mississippi, to sit on the couch with my Gam and do crosswords together.

Do you have any strange fears?
I don't think it's strange at all, but clowns. Clowns freak the shit right out of me. I can. not. handle. clowns. My other fear is being embalmed. It used to be an irrational, nightmare-y fear of being embalmed while I was still alive, but now it's just the entire concept. When I'm gone, folks, just take what you can use and set the rest on fire. Aaaand I just remembered another one: I have a fear of people falling out of the sky and crushing me to death. And it's actually the most rational fear of the three! A couple of months ago, someone in the neighbourhood threw herself off a building. Someone was walking by at the time, and...yeah.

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?
My snap answer is something that can fly...or a pony. Honestly, though? I'd be a house cat. No natural predators; your food is just handed to you; you get to decide exactly how affectionate or aloof you want to be on any given day; it's within expectations for you to spend several hours at a time stretched out in front of a sunbeam (while still inside, where the carpet and air conditioning live); and you're actively encouraged to freak out with delight over bright, shiny objects.

What are your pet peeves?
Well, this one actually came up last night: the way so many salespeople here just...hover. I know they're trying to be attentive and helpful, but planting yourself 3 feet away from me and staring at me, literally following me around the store while I shop with an expectant grin on your face? That's not helpful. It's weird and creepy. I can't count how many times I've turned around and left a store because I just can't take it.

What is your favorite TV show?
Of all time? Easy. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There are no words for how desperately Giles needs me. Current? I'd have to call it a toss-up between Archer and Doctor Who. And Mythbusters. Dangit, now that's too many. I'm not good with limits!

What's your favorite quote?
The wisest and most poignant quote I ever heard was written by J. Michael Straczynski, spoken by "Emperor Turhan" on Babylon 5.
"The past tempts us, the present confuses us, and the future frightens us. And our lives slip away, moment by moment, lost in that vast, terrible in-between."
I didn't say it was a happy quote.

Why did you decide to start blogging?
Originally, I used to blog about Buffy the Vampire Slayer during its orignal run (see above, re: "old enough to know better" ;p). Nail blogging started as a way to turn my burgeoning addiction into a more social activity. I still talk Husband's ears off about polish too, but his brain tends to do this...

How do you drink your coffee?
Like a wuss, that's how. Weak and sweet, with enough skim milk to turn it practically taupe.

If you could have any super power what would it be?
Teleportation! That, or the ability to time travel and see the future... No, wait, combine the two and call it TARDIS power!! And my majestic, blue cape would have pockets that were bigger on the inside.

I know I'm going to smack my forehead about sites I might have missed, but I would like to give The Liebster Award to:

Amoki's Corner // Cutie-cles // Mandy's Polish // Raggio di Luna // stuff i (s)watched

Here are my questions for you guys! I tried to make 'em short ones. No essays required. ;o)
  1. If you had to pick one polish to wear for an entire month, which one would it be?
  2. If you had the chance to live in another country for a year, all expenses paid, where would you pick?
  3. Big party with a really fun group or just hanging out with a couple of close friends?
  4. What was your favourite book as a child?
  5. Do you speak any second languages? What language would you like to learn?
  6. Is there an actor you'll watch in anything, so long as s/he is in it?
  7. Take a second to brag: what's something--any weird little thing in the world--you're really good at?
  8. What's your guilty pleasure?
  9. If you could hang out with any fictional character for a day, who would it be?
  10. If you could have anything in the world for dinner tonight, what would you pick?
  11. Any sports that you enjoy? Playing or watching, it's up to you.
Have at it, guys!

I would also like to say thank you to Kelly's Nail Blog and BeautyScraps for thinking of Did My Nails for the Versatile Blogger Award!

I've already done this one twice before and can't imagine anyone wants to read anything else about me today, but I'm happy to send this on one more time. For people who actually behave and play by the rules, they are:
  1. Nominate 15 bloggers who are relatively new to blogging.
  2. Let them know that you have nominated them.
  3. Share 7 random facts about yourself.
  4. Thank the bloggers that have nominated you.
  5. Add the Versatile Blogger Award picture to your blog post.
I would like to extend this award to:

Never Subtle Nails // The Manicurette //  漆 - Lacquered Nails

If I can tangent for a second, I was thinking about this earlier today... I'm passing the Versatile Blogger Award on to three sites this time, but if they choose 15 blogs who pick 15 of their own...that's 675 blogs in just two steps. And if I picked 11 blogs for the Liebster, who pick 11 more, who pick 11 more? That's over thirteen hundred blogs. That kinda blows my mind.

So, to the sites I'm sending these awards on to, follow the rules, break the rules, do whatever you like because the whole point isn't about giving you homework; it's about letting you know that I've really enjoyed visiting your blog. And if anyone is still reading this wall o' text, thank you so much to all the women and websites above, and to everyone who has visited Did My Nails!

  2. Thanks for tagging me, Elizabeth! Also, I am trying to get back into the Discworld books ... I love what I've read but I get so distracted with other things I have reading ADD now. SAD. "Feet of Clay" is taking me forever. (My friend suggested I re-start with the Night Watch books and that was a good suggestion)

    1. You're very welcome! And yes! I *love* the Night Watch books! "Feet of Clay" can take some getting into, but the story really gets going later. Outside of the Vimes novels, "Going Postal" is definitely a favourite, along with "Monstrous Regiment," but there are some minor Vimesey spoilers if you skip ahead to 'em. I also really love the witches' books. :D

    1. Thanks, Ashesela! Yeah, I had no idea at the time how near a thing it apparently was. Just as well, really. And after surgery there wasn't any room on the children's floor, so they stuck me in the geriatric ward, where all the nurses kept sneaking me extra ice cream. ^_^

  4. Our cats are the laziest kids ever! They're our first totally indoor cats and it's ridiculous. Whenever you even mention the word treat or grab the bag Ra completely flips his shit while Mandy just sits back, very poised, waiting her turn.

Buffy. I totally had a girl-crush on Willow. Giles was awesome and Spike was always my undead boyfriend. Tall, blonde with a British accent? DONE.

The people falling out of the sky reminds me of Donnie Darko and Joe Dirt. Both dealing with planes though and not so much people. Hmm.

Some of those dots look like squid eyeballs which makes them ridonkulously rad in my book. I'm sure squid eyeballs weren't what you were going for, but that makes it that much better!

WHY DO I FORGET PEOPLES BLOGS! It's like when I get these awards my brainmeats turn to mush and I have to check my blogroll to find blogs. I needs to be making me a list.

But yes, CONGRATS! Yay for shinies!!

    1. Squid eyeball nails are totally teh raeg now! Didn't you know?!

Spike was my undead boyfriend too, before he went all creepy-possessive, lovesick stalker. He was always best when he was being straight-up evil. His brief romance with Harmony gave me ridiculous amounts of happy, though. I may or may not have once had a 'shipper fansite dedicated to them. >_<

  6. I almost did the same exact mani last night but I couldn't bring myself to keep on the mocha-y color, I just didn't like it. I think your picture came out nice, I don't see the caked at all ! lol

    1. Aw, thanks, Cee! I think this pic did come out okay, but the others are so chock full of shiny glare you can hardly see the polish underneath.

Mochas and tans are funny sometimes, aren't they? They're supposed to be so neutral, but finding one that's light or dark enough and tinted right for your skin tone and/or mood can be crazymaking!

  7. Yup, a house cat also would be my first choice LOL

  10. Oh my god! I love your blog! I stalked you from the comment on mine. They have Vanilla Coke Zero somewhere! It exists in the states! And is imported to Canada for ridiculous cost, as with everything else.

Old enough to know, but too young to care is also a line in a song by Anberlin. Go find them if you haven't =D

And now I want to be a housecat.

I've seen the Vanilla Coke Zero, but I don't know if I'm ready to open my heart like that again. *sniff*
