Icing Love It and Need Sunglasses

Since I was rushing to meet the deadline for my Tuesday post I only did one hand, so I needed to do some "walking around" nails...

Twinsie Tuesday: Colour Blocking

With all of about 8 minutes to go before this post is supposed to go "live" I finally managed a decent approximation of today's Twinsie Tuesday theme: colour blocking.

I had to redo these so many times that I've literally run out of time to do things like watermark pictures or clean up my cuticles, but I think I'll actually enjoy doing this one again when I have a little more time. Wanna see the failures? Read on!

Glitter Sandwich: Trade Edition

A while back, I saw Nicole by OPI Rainbow in the S-Kylie at Sasa, but since I was planning to get OPI Rainbow Connection, I decided not to pick it up. Then Rainbow Connection sold out like mad, and S-Kylie was long gone when I went back for it. I mean, of course it was, right? Because that's how it works.

Luckily for me I recently did my first couple of nail polish trades, with two amazing bloggers (and thoroughly awesome women), Brandi of The Collegiate Nail and Tara of Polishy of Truth. And among the fabulous polishes I got from them were two bottles of Rainbow in the S-Kylie! This is a lush, playful glitter fantastic enough for me to be totally excited about having two of, and out of all the polishes I hauled back from the US, it was the first one I wanted to wear.

Twinsie Tuesday: Floral Nails

The theme for today's Twinsie Tuesday post is floral nails, and I was especially excited for it because I love doing dotted flower nail art. But aaugh, the trouble I ended up having! This design looked better in my head; that polish had gone goopy; this polish wouldn't level; that colour was way too dark when it dried...I had problems with just about every single element of today's manicure except for the flowers themselves, so I decided to ditch the fancy, new ideas and untried polishes and go back to the beginning with cherry blossom nails.

Stateside Haul

My polishes are here! My polishes are here! At long, glorious last, my polishes are here!!

As some of you may know, I spent pretty much the month of July in the States, and while I was there I stocked up on...well, on every pretty little polish that caught my eye. On so many polishes I just haven't been able to find here in Hong Kong. On so. many. polishes.

I felt like a drug mule with my plastic bags of bubble-wrapped polishes stuffed between jeans and bras in my suitcases and wadded inside t-shirts in the box I mailed home. That box finally got here, so I stacked the entire haul together, and...yeah. It looked like one of those press conference tables you see on the news where the DEA guys pose in front of all the stuff they seized in the raid.

Then I unwrapped them all and thought of this quote from Snuff, by Sir Terry Pratchett...

"...and in the middle of all this, Young Sam stood paralysed, almost in tears with the knowledge that no matter how hard he tried he just couldn't play with everything all at once."

I feel ya', Young Sam. I feel ya'.

Twinsie Tuesday: Animal Inspired

This week's Twinsie Tuesday theme is "Animal Inspired" nails. I wanted to push myself a little outside of my comfort zone with some nail art for this, so I cruised Google images until this guy caught my eye.

Source: Scientific American

Meet the poisonous Red-Backed Dart Frog. Native to South America, in addition to being insanely brightly coloured, it can cause cause serious injury to humans and will kill your chicken dead. "Outside my comfort zone"? Check.

Robin's Egg: Nubar Black Polka Dot on Wednesday

I have a big polish happy today. Not only did my favourite store just start carrying Nubar, but when I went in this week to ogle the new pretties, they had Black Polka Dot! I hustled home and tried it on with Zoya Wednesday.

I love the result--it's like robin's eggs!

Sation Shock Me Twice Pink

Earlier this week I tried my first Sation polish...

Sation Shock Me Twice Pink swatch

This is Sation Shock Me Twice Pink, from the California Gleamin' limited collection and yes, that's colour-accurate. It's a brilliant, amazingly neon Barbie pink that still retains a hint of softness, thanks to its delicate blue shimmer. I had no idea that shimmer was there before I started painting my nails, but it adds so much depth to the overall colour.

Dotted Tan and Site Awards

I'm about to write a whomping great wall of text, so I thought I'd start off with some nails I did a couple of days ago...

black and white dots on tan

The base colour is OPI San Tan-tonio, a smooth and creamy tan that leans ever-so-slightly olive on me. Just for giggles, I added some random dots on top in OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls (near-white) and Revlon Colorstay Stiletto (black). I can't decide if it turned out stylish or silly, but it was just fun to play with my dotting tools after a month away from all my nailstuffs. Didn't get many good pictures of these because I went way heavy with the SV, hoping to keep from smoodging the dots by swiping them too directly with the brush. I mostly succeeded, but it doesn't seem practical to have to use this much top coat. The resulting shine was dang near overwhelming! It was actually kind of awesome in real life, but for pictures, not so much. They look super-caked.

Any suggestions for not streaking nail art with your top coat?

The Liebster Award and The Versatile Blogger Award

Thank you so, so much to the lovely bloggers who have sent awards to Did My Nails. Links, weird facts about me, and my new pretties after the cut!

Twinsie Tuesday: Glassfleck Polish

I am so incredibly excited today for two great reasons! For one, Did My Nails just reached 100 followers, and I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who's visited, commented, and even decided to follow since I started this blog. I'd still be doing it, even if it were just me sitting around talking to myself, going, "Ooh, remember that time I did that thing? Yeah, that was kinda cute...," but having you guys drop in makes it so very much more fun.

The second and bigger reason I'm ridiculously excited is that today is my first post for Twinsie Tuesdays! The women in this group are so friendly and talented, and I'm beyond thrilled to have been asked to join in.

Today's topic for Twinsie Tuesday is glassflecked polish, and the timing is great. Just a couple of days ago, while I was impatiently waiting for my Stateside nail mail to arrive, I stopped by Cher2 to see their new selection of Nubar, and just as I was about to check out, I spotted one last bottle of China Glaze Zombie Zest, sitting all by its lonesome on the rack...I snatched that puppy up with a quickness!

Swatch & Review: Skin Food BL514

alternate title: I'm baaaack!

So after a month on the road I'm finally back again and nearly over some truly colossal jet lag. Shipped myself a whomping boatload of nail mail from the States (shush, spellcheck--"whomping" is so a word!) which should be here soon, and in the meantime I decided to try to relearn how to paint my nails after all this time away with one of my untried polishes, Skin Food BL514.
